Between The Light and Life

Interpretation of death is a crucial part of Eastern philosophy. In Chinese culture, instead of focusing on the ones who are gone, people explain death as the spirit and prosperity carried on by the living. This is a continuation of life. Even though the sun sets at dusk, it always rises again the next morning.According to this，people believe that they need a medium to communicate with the deceased，which is the light,a light with wind.Between The Light and Life is a memorial construction site designed in Hefei Wanshan ecological cemetery. The construction’s design shows the interaction between the living and the dead through nature. It explains the idea that even with the loss, the spirit of life is eternal.We use sun light and wind to recreate the atmosphere of nature at the memorial site. The plastic bags respond to light and wind, two important factors of nature, through expansion and contraction. The transformation process between different statuses simulates the process of breathing. When there is wind, the plastic cloth fills up with air, refracting some of the light and creating a private and illusionary memorial space. If the wind stops, the plastic bags shrink. The sunlight passing through the plastic bags leads people from memories to reality, reminding them to continue their lives under the warmth of the light.
