The building is situated in Ottakring, the 16th district of Vienna, at Gaullachergasse. It is a public space and shall represent a kind of communal centre. The social interaction is being promoted by creating an encounter spot. Besides the social aspect, daylight was very important for the design process.Because of the horizontal waves daylight can shine far into the building (in winter partly even through the building), which attracts the attention of potential visitors and makes them „follow the light“.Our concept is characterized by community and team solidarity. The waves connect different floors in an inconvenient way. This shall arouse curiosity to explore all the spaces of the building. We designed the public spaces with open floor plans so that the visitors are more likely to try out new things and connect with new people.Interior and exterior are becoming one through large, transparent sliding elements. Because they are situated on the south side of the building, overheating in summer is prevented by cantilevered balconies. During mild weather conditions the room can be extended by opening the doors. The wavelike elements reflect this smooth transition aswell. Those wavy elements are found in the whole project mainly as access areas. But it is not only for accessing the different stories, it also becomes part of the spatial concept. The seating steps can be used, but you can also climb up or slide down the wave itself. Additionally, the art created in the atelier can be exhibited there. In the building at the street you will be guided through the different space usages, because of the development of the building. Thus, the visitors shall be motivated to try out the offered activities.
