this project is situated in the city of biskra one of the 58 wilayas or cities in the country of Algeria/ north Africa/ , this city has a hot Mediterranean climate with dry summer whose hot period extending from april to september with high temperatures which can reach 40°C in summer,so our context is an important public square in the city of biskra which requires thermal comfort for its users and who says thermal comfort says sun and light this is why our project will be daylight and shades controller equipments that will be making harmony with the vegetation as well as with the urban furniture proposed for the well-being and the grouping of users as well as the recreation in a healthy environment by using the light going through architecture in this equipments to lower the temperature and have the thermal comfort. this square is located in the city center of biskra one of the most structuring and important facing the seat of the wilaya ((the wilaya is the administration for the prefect of the city)) despite the lack of urban furniture and large areas wich are empty and not used especially in the summer during high temperatures or during precipitation and rainy season.the layout proposal contains three types of mouldable and flexible covers or equipments for the seasons and especially the shade/light ratio during the summer as well as the street furniture with a design favouring family groups and groups in general.

therefore from these climatic data and the analysis of a structuring public space opposite the headquarters of the wilaya of biskra:

the development proposal contains three types of modular and flexible covers or shade/ light equipment’s that are flexible with the seasons as well as with the shade/daylight ratio during the summer in order to control the daylight and the intensity of the sun’s rays or daylight frames and finally the thermal comfort.those three types are :– Hexagonal parasol shade equipment -Lace shadehouse with two sliding boards “frame of light and shadow” – Chessboard shade house

for the parasol and chessboard types of canopies, the mechanical system contains small articulating parts allowing sliding of the light boards made of laminated wood -kerto- and which open upwards and close downwards.

the lace shade house type with two -planks or two sliding boards can control the direction and rate of the sun’s rays and the daylight /shade ratio through a mechanical system containing rotational joints for mobilizing the second plank or board to open and close the pores through the two boards.

Designed for a square in Biskra, three types of so-called modular and flexible shade equipment are: “Hexagonal parasol “, “chessboard” and “lace shade house with two blades or sliding boards» which all touch the same theme:– Thermal comfort in public spaces.– Control of the daylight/shade ratio according to climatic circumstances.– Seasonal adaptation (rain/precipitation). -these canopies are modular with a mechanical system, those are matrices of shadows with solar light movement with a manual mechanism for the moment.

Concerning the load-bearing structure of all the covers or canopies the material used is metal but for the cover floors are all made of very light materials which is the so-called laminated wood Veneer –kerto- which is a composite material made up of layers of wood veneer whose fibers are mainly oriented in the same direction. Some laminates may have a cross grain veneer. This project is mainly a demonstration of how the daylight can be controlled in constructions so that we can have a better comfort and wellbeing in public spaces or squares through urban design that affects daylight directly by cutting daylight rays into amounts that can be formed as a frame shape of lights and shades. In the types of canopies called chessboard and lace shadehouse with two sliding boards this frame of lights and shadows are so visible and clear and the most exciting is that with the movement of the mechanical system in those two canopies you can see the movement of light and shadows as a frame, those frames also can move throughout the sun movement during the day or the 24 hours from sun rise to sun set so the movement of light is when the boards in canopies open and close upwards and downwards and also when the sun moves in 24 hours. In the type of canopies called hexagonal parasol shade equipment the grouping of people and families with intimacy is favoured and made so easily through this urban design that an also control the amount of light under this parasol for the thermal comfort of the users or families .

This project addresses problematic in cities like the urban heat, where daylight and architecture can create change to a healthier living environments.

this is focused on architecture for health and well-being .
