Groblersdal located in Limpopo, South Africa, is a small town home to the Nothern Transvaal Ndebele people whose rich culture and vibrant colors, brings in a lot of attention and curiosity.Unfortunately the richly cultural Ndebele people have fallen into the claws of South Africa’s poverty stricken society. Life of a typical Ndebele family includes not having access to electricity, experiencing food shortages and not having clean purifi ed drinking water within a 1km radius of their homes. Apart from them being deprived from some of them human necessities, they have overall lost their cultural vernacular. Taking all the above mentioned issues into consideration, the Rainbow Halo attempts to use daylight to address as many of these issues as possible.Addressing the issues of how the Ndebele people have lost their cultural identity, due to living in such a poverty stricken society, the Rainbow Halo, has a design that mimics that of a traditional Ndebele hut, not only the shape but also the geometric patterns on the exterior that is brought into the interior through the daylight reflection with the glass all of which is an architectural vernacular to the culture, therefore the pod also becomes a place of identity for the community.
