Light is the invisible thing that we can feel but can’t touch, and people see it as hope, memory, pure and clear. In addition, in the eyes of designers, the relationship between light and shadow can shape wonderful spatial effects, trigger people’s imagination mechanism, through light and shadow and themselves, and the environment dialogue. As the epitome of Qingdao’s long history and culture, Qingdao old Town has witnessed the changes and development of cultural society in the course of time transfer. Therefore, we hope to retain the original appearance of the old city as much as possible without destroying the existing buildings, and hope to let visitors see the old city again through certain design techniques. We chose to use the most common light and shadow effects, relying on their time-changing characteristics, combined with new technologies and materials, to restore the old city’s changing appearance. The light is carried by light gauze, suspended from the facade of the courtyard of the characteristic building of the old town. It is covered with special paint and glass fragments, so that the light can react in a directional way and generate the old scene that we want to restore. In this process, with the change of light intensity, the images on the curtain are sometimes blurred and sometimes clear, and the old style disappears while the existing buildings are clearly visible. There is a dynamic change process. In a series of light and shadow changes, many buildings that were once hard to touch and feel are presented in a virtual way, and visitors will have more interest in understanding the past history through the real visible comparison between ancient and modern. It is also a precious gift of memory for residents who have lived here for a long time.
