Design backgroundThe design aims to provide residents isolated in old residential areas during the COVID-19 with a street environment that can relax and heal. Therefore, we have designed a simple device to decorate the streets with plastic water bottles and small infrared solar lamps common in residents’ homes, so that residents can relieve their anxiety when they go out to queue for nucleic acid and look at the outdoor environment at home.

Location analysisDuring the epidemic prevention and control period, the old streets in Shanghai were in poor greening and appearance due to aging and defect of lighting facilities, and lacked outdoor activity places with epidemic prevention conditions. The long-term lack of sunshine and the dull and monotonous street scene will cause the residents to be bored, anxious and disordered in biological rhythm. The base of this design is located in Shanghai, China, which is gradually resuming production and life. We selected old streets near Zhoujiazui road and Zhoushan road in Hongkou District for device design. Many buildings here have a history of more than 100 years. The streets are narrow, so it is difficult to carry out large-scale demolition and reconstruction. In order to reserve a wide enough road for ambulances and supplies, we chose to place lamps between street lamps and power poles. Lamps far away will reduce the gathering of residents and remind the queue to keep a distance when queuing for nucleic acid. In addition, because the materials are easy to obtain, residents can also make them at home and decorate the building facade.

Population analysisThe design mainly serves the following groups:Isolate residents who need stress relief and relaxation therapy at homeResidents who can interact with the device during nucleic acid productionA doctor who works long hours at a nucleic acid test site

Device structureWe have selected solar lamps with infrared sensing function, which can be switched on and off automatically according to the light intensity to reduce the infection caused by human touch. The light can also flash according to the infrared ray when people pass by. People can interact with the lamps without contact when queuing for nucleic acid detection, and experience the fun of light flashing alternately with their own actions. The lampshade is made of the plastic water bottle in the residents’ home. The residents can cut open the bottle and put the infrared sensing solar lamp in it. The colored fragments added in it will reflect the sun light during the day, making the bottle show flashing color in the sun. It can be used as a good decoration itself, and can also match with the light to produce a better visual effect at night.
