SAVOUR THE LIGHT NEW MODEL OF ENLIGHTENED URBAN EXTENSION ROOFTOP COMMUNITY Even in high density, you can enjoy pure natural light. Following the subtle flow of rays and shadows through the tight communities and sunny squares, you find yourself in the ancient fairytale timber city, where life flourishes. The project proposes a timber extension for a typical urban residential block from the 1960s. We find multiple mass housing blocks from the 1960s in many European cities. Back in history, they solved an urgent issue of housing supply. Our project proposes a 2-level extension for a typical 5-storey building, ensuring further population density growth. Its innovative design enhances the environment of the existing urban blocks, adding social value and sophisticated daylight managemant system for pleasurable spaces. Thus, our project is a future model of compact urban living. Renowned pieces of architectural theory, ‘Eyes of the Skin’ and ‘In Praise of Shadows’ both teach us that people need to feel a pleasant shade in their private space. Likewise, warm light enlivens a public place for community gatherings. Following this thought, our modular rooftop community has a specific Light Pattern. Passing through the right combination of light and shadow in private, semi-private, and public spaces, a person feel enlightened. The new model of high-density urban living provokes savouring daylight in close communities. With new regulations and tecnologies, we can define extended population density, average necessary floor area, sufficient insolation and ventilation. However, we also need new standards for daylight and shadow proportion in public and private spaces in order to ensure truly harmonious community life. Our new model of high-density urban living combines the modern standards of daylight and air supply and the new system of light and shadow management. Private spaces are dimly, yet sufficiently lit to ensure intimacy. Observing the pleasant game of light and shadow, people find peace and quiet in their apartments. Pleasantly lit semi-private courtyards, emerging between the living modules, provoke community gatherings. Together with public and private terraces, they form an intriguing light pattern within the community. Main public squares between the modular communities are abuntantly lit with daylight. Together with the Tower installations, crowning them, the squares resemble the old city plazas within the quaint streets. Light timber-frame Tower installations contast with the living modules architecture. Daylight elegantly passes through them. Resembling medieval timber city spires, Tower installations act as vertical dominants and landmarks. Installations are placed on top of the vertical communication, connecting the rooftop community with the existing building and the street level. Thus, they mark the emergency exits. Some modern finishing materials have excessive glow, when reflecting the sun. On the contrary, timber finishing has a light and warm texture, pleasant for the eyes. It is historically valuable, since wooden houses were present in many ancient cultures. Lightweight timber constructions also guarantee the optimal load on the existing building. Thus, the new model of urban rooftop community has an innovatiove daylight management system for human benefit. The figures prove that its structure is economically optimal, while providing a rich environment for fruitful community life. MODULES TYPOLOGY. A - single apartment, 36m2.
