Background:
Ancestor worship is a tradition of Chinese people. People are in tribute to their ancestors on Memorial Day and part of festivals. With the rapid expansion of the city and the scarcity of land, the future cities will be vertical cities with megastructures. The land of graves will be occupied by buildings, and it has to be no remembrance space in compact houses. The busy work also makes it impossible for people to return to their hometown to remember the ancestor. The traditional ancestor worship is disappearing in the life in high density cities.
In order to retain the tradition in the future megastructures, we choose a part of the long space on the west side in the bottom public space of the huge construction, and make use of the change of light to resonate and arouse the affection to ancestors.
First Space – Cemetery
The traditional tombstones are changed to the gravestone bricks on the wall to save the land. The sunset passes through holes in the exterior walls of the space, leaving light spots on the walls and on the ground. As the time of a day changes and the date of a year changes, the incidence angle of sunlight changes. And the positions of light spots changes, each time period when the gravestone brick is lit up by the light spot changes. After calculation, the light spot is supposed to light up the gravestone brick at the specific time of the day of death. When someone enters the first space, the light spot changes over time. Someone is waiting at a gravestone brick, the light spot approaching gradually. When it comes to someone’s gravestone brick, which means the return of the dead, the living and the dead are connected. In this cemetery, the light of the particular time symbolizes the dead.
Second Space -Hand in Hand
The holes scattered on the wall converge into a gap leading to the front.
During walking, the person is induced to tough the line light. The light responds to the touch, and forms the shadow that penetrates the fingers, which means that the living and the dead are hand in hand. Linear light guides people to move forward, and remind people of the time that they have been together.
At the end of the corridor are two staggered walls, leaking light through the gaps of the walls, suggesting the coming space climax.
Third Space -Encounter
When people enter the last space, they are surrounded by curved light on the walls, facing the light spot in front. The ceiling is a mirror that doubles the light, human and space to create a sense of sanctity. The light creates the imaginary atmosphere, and the man in the mirror is synchronized with the real person’s behavior, which means the meeting of the living and the dead. This is the climax of the space sequence.
