Falaj Museum, located in Al Khuwair, Muscat, Oman, is a remarkable building situated near the sea. One of the primary concerns in Oman is the intense heat, which the museum addresses innovatively. Adjacent to the site is the Muscat City Desalination Company, which filters seawater and pumps it into the building, creating a water-filled glass system. This system channels water between the glass panes of the windows, absorbing the sun’s heat, helping to maintain a cooler interior, reducing the use of air conditioners, and lowering energy consumption. The used water is then directed to the roof, where it flows into a falaj that functions as a skylight. This falaj features openings that irrigate the tree in the exterior of the building, providing a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing solution to the hot climate.
Additionally, the building boasts a sloping walkable roof with a 1:7 ratio, allowing visitors to walk on the roof and enjoy views of the sea. This unique design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the museum but also creates an interactive and engaging experience for visitors. The integration of traditional Omani architectural elements, such as the falaj, with modern sustainable technologies showcases the country’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing innovation. The Falaj Museum stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of culture, technology, and environmental stewardship, making it a must-visit destination in Muscat.
