The project was inspired by a need to create light within dark slums. It contextualizes the Jembatan Besi Slum in Tambora, Jakarta. The slum is famous because of the “Venus Alley”, an area within the slum which admits a very limited amount of daylight. The lack of sunlight is due to the density and stacked way of building within the slums, as people build above the narrow alleyways.

Venus Alley Beams is a movement for the creation of light in dark slums. We reckon that daylight is an essential factor to humanity, and should be treated as a necessity for all, but unfortunately it is not the case, especially in Venus Alley. To provide a solution, we came up with the light tubes. The light tubes channel daylight to dark alleyways and homes of residents of greatly dense slums. The idea of the pathway is a starting point to the eradication of low access to light, in Venus Alley, and other slums around the world. As light is a symbol of hope, we hope that through the light tubes, we can map out a pathway to light for the residents of the alley.
